Avoid Choosing the Wrong Business Opportunity

Choosing the wrong business opportunity? Is that possible? What does that mean?

What I mean by that is if you are just starting out as an affiliate or internet marketer and are trying to decide which opportunity to get involved with, your choice should be one that also suits your overall personality.  Let me explain.

Hi, my name is Deidre, and I consider myself to be somewhat shy and introverted. Therefore, I tend to avoid situations where I have to use the telephone a lot or have to do a lot of talking to strangers.

When I first started with affiliate marketing 5 years ago, I had no idea that my personality could hinder my chances of succeeding in this business. My first crack at network marketing was in the financial services niche. Although the company was very reputable and had great products that could help many people, I did not have much success with it. In fact, I ended up quitting.

                                                                                 good choice-bad choice

Why did I fail?

Despite the great training provided, there were 3 reasons why I failed:

1. Had to make phone calls to set up appointments with potential customers.

My upline encouraged me to make a list of friends and family or just about everyone I knew and call them to talk about the products I was offering. I truly dreaded making phone calls and setting appointments especially with family and friends. I did everything I could to avoid this simply because it was not in my personality.

2. Had to do face to face “kitchen table” presentations to potential customers.

The idea of making a live presentation inside a customer’s home was very intimidating and scary to me.  Again, my shyness and being introverted got in the way of me succeeding .

3. Lack of confidence in presenting the material.

Even though I had the materials in front of me that I just had to basically read to the customer, I was afraid that if the customer asked me a question that I did not know the answer to, I would reveal to the customer that I did not know what I was doing and thus lose the potential sale.

What is the lesson to be learned from all of this?

If you are someone who has an outgoing , extroverted, non-shy personality, then I suggest you look into opportunities where you are encouraged to make phone calls, set up appointments, and talk to strangers. If you are the more introverted, shy type, I suggest you look into opportunities where you don’t have to make phone calls or set up appointments. You should choose a business opportunity while keeping in mind your personality strong points. I am not saying that it will be impossible for you to succeed if you have already chosen an opportunity that seems opposite to your personality type. I just mean that you may have to work a little harder at it.

Still don’t know what type of opportunity to choose?

If you are the shy, introverted type like me, I would suggest you consider Wealthy Affiliate. I found this website based upon a recommendation from a blog that I subscribe to. I have been a member of Wealthy Affiliate for some time now, and I am learning more here about creating websites, understanding how customers make purchases, and writing good website content than I have learned from so called e-books and videos that I have paid a lot of money for.  Even if you are the outgoing, extroverted type, Wealthy Affiliate may benefit you as well in that perhaps you could pick up some tips to use to better promote your business. You can even set up a free starter account to see for yourself what Wealthy Affiliate has to offer. However, if you decide that Wealthy Affiliate is not for you, you can always cancel your account; no harm, no foul. Feel free to leave a comment or ask questions; I’m here to help.

  1. I agree! I am a very shy and private person myself and I thought that you have to be very public online in order to make a business out of it. I could not have been more wrong! Now I can tailor my online marketing after what suits my personality and that’s great. I can hide behind my computer 🙂

      Hi Victoria,
Thanks for your comment. It’s amazing that since I have written this post, I found out that there are so many of us who are the shy, introverted type. I am glad I am not the only one….Best of success to you in your business.

  2. I guess that’s why I like Wealthy Affiliate so much – because I am also an introverted person. It fits perfectly for me too. But I think it could be a great opportunity for those extroverts too. They would probably have no trouble telling people all about the wonderful training they get at WA.

    Great post!
